The National Pension System is straightforward once the account exists. Getting it open — PRAN, the right tier, the fund manager choice, the forms — is where people stall. This page is about that part. What NPS is and whether it suits you is a separate question, and we have written it up properly.

What you need to hand

Have these ready and the account can usually be opened in one sitting.

PAN and Aadhaar

Aadhaar-based opening is the quickest route, using the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar for the OTP. A PAN-based route exists if your Aadhaar mobile is out of date.

Bank details and a cancelled cheque

The account is where your eventual lump sum and annuity land, so it should be one you intend to keep. A scanned cancelled cheque or a bank statement page is enough.

Your tier decision

Tier I is the retirement account and the one that carries the tax benefit. Tier II is optional, has no lock-in and no deduction. You cannot have Tier II without Tier I, and most people should simply open Tier I.

A nominee

Add one at the time of opening. It is a two-minute field that saves a family months of paperwork later, and it is the single most-skipped step in the whole process.

How it goes

  1. 01

We check whether NPS is the right tool at all

It is not for everybody, and the answer changed for a lot of people when the new tax regime removed most of the deduction. We would rather tell you that at the start than open an account you will regret locking money into.

  2. 02

Open the account and get your PRAN

The Permanent Retirement Account Number is yours for life and moves with you across employers and cities. Once it is issued the account is live.

  3. 03

Choose the fund manager and asset mix

NPS lets you pick a pension fund manager and how much sits in equity, corporate debt and government securities — and lets you change both later. Few Indian retirement products let you undo the first decision you made.

  4. 04

    Set up the contribution

₹500 opens a Tier I account and ₹1,000 a year keeps it active. Beyond that you decide, and there is nothing stopping you from contributing more in a good year and less in a lean one.

Questions

With Aadhaar OTP and the documents to hand, usually the same day. The PRAN is issued shortly after. Delays almost always come from a mobile number no longer linked to Aadhaar, so check that first.
